Coelho's novel entices the mind's soul, and captivates the mind's eye.

Brazilian author, Paulo Coelho does it again, in his novel The Valkyries, a story that is more biographical than it is fiction. His accomplishments and adventures through the hot desert with his wife Christina leave the reader exhausted alongside him. In his quest to speak with angels, Paulo indulges himself by heading out to California to the Mojave Desert, where he will meet a boy named Gene, whom can help him try to find out the way he could learn to speak with his Angel.

Plot: The Valkyries

Before leaving from Brazil, Paulo and his spiritual master exchange words in the airport, Paulo trying till the last second to get the secret, his master in turn, leaves him with some wisdom words;

“And each man kills the thing he loves, by all let this be heard, some do it with a bitter look, some with a flattering word, the coward does it with a kiss, the brave man with a sword.”

On his arrival to California, he and his wife sit on a long six hour trip in a long stretch of darkness. With those words from his master, he sets out on a venture that in the end leaves he and his wife Christina completely satisfied with any outcome that came along.

Coelho Creates a Powerful Setting

The setting is tense and obscure; the real Paulo is human and full of his own questions. His knowledge of the desert is questioned when he and his wife set out on a long walk through the mysterious sand dunes. They set themselves free by letting their nude bodies be devoured by the tragic sun. The suspense builds when his wife Christina first learns to quiet her second mind, and figures out how to talk with her Angel, before he does.

On their long treacherous journey, they meet Valhalla, and The Valkyries. They take them on a journey of forgiveness and the pacts that one must make before being able to re-unite with your angel. Paulo, desperate to speak with his angel is forced to recall his sinful wicked past in order to clear his channels to communicate with his beloved Angel. With the love that he and his wife share, the outcome becomes blameless and clear.

Air, Earth, Fire, Water

As children, as innocence is still present in our souls, we all had guardian angels. We all had those imaginary friends that only we could see. The ones our parents forced us to drive out of our reality. We fail to realize how important it is to keep contact with these Angels that protect us and guide us through our daily struggles. You can call these things coincidences, sheer luck or recognize them as your guardian angels.
